    FUN POTATO FACTS

    1) Potatoes are very good for you:

    •         Potatoes have more potassium than a banana.
    •         Potatoes have more Vitamin C than an orange.
    •         Potatoes have more fiber than an apple.
    •         Potatoes are classified as a vegetable.

    2) The British are the third largest consumers of potatoes in Europe.  Only the Portugese and Irish eat more.

    3) How many potatoes do you eat a year? Nationwide statistics show that on average each person will have tucked into 103kg – that is approximately 500 medium spuds.

    4) Although the potato never made it into the Bible, in 1995 it made it to outer space (Spudnik!!).  The humble potato was the first food ever to be grown in outer space.  Astronauts took potato plants on space shuttle Columbia in 1995 to see if they could grow them in zero gravity.  Thankfully for those who can’t live without real potatoes, the experiment was a success.

    5) Potatoes Can be Gigantic The world’s largest potato weighed in at 18 pounds, 4 ounces according to the Guinness Book of World Records. That’s enough for 73 portions of medium fries at McDonalds.

    6) The Irish weren’t the first to eat them.  While potatoes may be synonymous with the Irish these days, they were grown in the Andes mountains centuries before Europeans ever set foot in the new world. The Inca people of Peru were growing them as far back as 200 BC. They were first introduced to Britain and Ireland in the late 1500s. They weren’t an immediate hit either, many people blamed them for diseases and railed against them because they weren’t mentioned in the Bible.

    7) And Finally, Louis XVI of France wore potato blossoms in his buttonhole - wasn't he the dandy
